The structure of my teeth

Your teeth are made up of several layers. The whole tooth is composed of the ‘Crown’, outside your gum and the ‘Root’, that sits in the hard jaw bone covered by the soft gum (gingiva).

  • Enamel: Covers the outer layer of the tooth. Your enamel is very hard and strong, made of a minerals but can dissolve in acids.
  • Dentin: The inner layer of the tooth is dentin, also made of minerals but softer than enamel.
  • Pulp: The middle part of the tooth, under enamel and dentine, carries blood vessels and nerve endings.
